The All New Breast Unit ABUHB “A Centre of Excellence”
The Aneurin Bevan University Health Board Breast Clinics are the busiest in Wales seeing over 6000 patients per year with 500 cancers being detected and diagnosed every year. To improve the service of patients with all breast conditions the ABUHB are building a “Centre of Excellence” at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr Hospital in Ystrad Mynach. Due for completion by 2023 it is intended the unit will provide state of the art facilities for patients and staff.
The vision of the new breast unit is to have a one stop clinic that will make the journey with breast cancer much easier, by having quicker diagnosis and treatment plans. The Friends of the Breast Unit ABUHB has been set up to fundraise for the additional items the NHS cannot fund. The group are a voluntary group of breast cancer survivors who are passionate about improving the facilities and an improved service for others.
An ambitious fundraising appeal has been set up to raise two hundred thousand pounds (£300,000) to enhance facilities at the unit, in order for so men, women and their families can benefit for years to come. The group has plans to involve the whole community in reaching their target with #TurnABUHBpink events throughout the year; will you take part to help us achieve this?

Psychosocial support is considered to be an integral part of the management of breast cancer, as up to one-third of women develop severe anxiety or a depressive illness within a year of diagnosis (NICE 2018).
Already the funding has supported a new breast cancer support group in Ystrad Mynach and has helped start and promote two other groups.
The needs of the patient have been carefully considered and visits to other hospitals for tests and surgery will be greatly reduced. Diagnosis will be faster, thus avoiding anxious waits for results.
